In the style of a French mythological tapestry, this finely woven SE Persian city carpet has a design known in several larger and smaller examples. Ours is just right. Against a navy ground with a millefleurs pattern, three musical putti float above a maenad dancing to the pipes of the scantily-clad male musician to the fright, all beneath a plinth supporting a fluted, flowering garden urn. Other musical instruments make a still life in the foreground. The border shows repeating roundel female portraits along with rabbits and monkeys. The original tapestry is by Francois Boucher. A wall hanging or floor carpet. Good condition.
